This Halloween, let’s make a spooky trick or treat bag for your little one to collect the candies and goodies. This DIY trick or treat bag is so easy and fun to make!
Sewing for Halloween is something I love and I also love to applique spooky designs onto anything I sew for the eerie season. Ghosts are my favorite applique designs for Halloween. They are easier to sew and quick to finish with eerie results!
Here I have made a black DIY trick or treat bag with a ghost applique. There are three different ghost templates to choose from. The applique is also very simple as the ghost figures have simple clean edges. If you are a beginner at appliqueing, this is a must-try project!
This is also a very easy sewing pattern that any beginner can try. So without further ado, let’s get started with this DIY trick or treat bag and have fun with them!

DIY Halloween Trick or Treat Bag
Supplies:
- I yard of black cotton fabric
- 2 pieces of white felt
- 1 piece of black felt or foam
- Plastic googly eyes
- Tacky glue, hot glue gun or spray adhesive ( I prefer spray adhesive)
- Rotary cutting mat set
- Scissors
- All-purpose thread
- Wonder sewing clips or pins
- Sewing machine

Instructions For the Bag:
Gather your supplies.
Cut two 13”x13” pieces for the bag main and two 4”x18” strips for the straps from your fabric
Fold up one side of each of the 13”x13” pieces ¼” and press with a warm iron.
Next, Press the same side up 1” and press.
Let’s join the two bag pieces together.
Layer the two bag pieces with the right sides together and edges aligning. Pin or clip along both the long sides and the bottom.
Using a ½” seam allowance, sew along the sides and the bottom, leaving the top open.
Next, you are going to make a boxed corner. This allows your bag to “stand up”.
Lay your bag on a flat surface and using a fabric marker, mark a 1.5” square on each bottom corner and cut the square out.
Turn the bag inside out and pinch the opening of each corner and line up the seams and press.
Pin and using a 1/2” seam allowance, close the opening. Trim the seams.
Instructions For the Straps:
1)Fold each strap lengthwise ¼” and press with a warm iron. 2)Next, fold up the ends ¼” and press.3) Finally, fold the straps in half and press. 4) Using a ¼” seam allowance, use a straight stitch to close the open side of each strap.
Mark your placement for the straps on the inside of the bag. I marked mine 2” in from the side and 5/8” from the top.
Now sew small rectangles with two diagonals, starting from one of the bottom edges of the strap, across the bottom, up the side, across the top, and down the other side. Repeat on the other side and then for the other strap.
Instructions For the Ghosts:
Pin the ghost template to the white felt and cut your ghosts out.
Cut your mouths out of the black foam.
Using your choice of adhesive, attach the eyes and mouth to the ghosts.
Next, Using your choice of adhesive (or you can stitch them on) attach the ghosts to your bags. Now you are ready to go trick or treating!
