Sundress Sewing Pattern for 18 Inch American Doll.

Materials Required:

  • One fabric scrap of dimensions, 7.25-inches width x 29-inches length, in any desired color and print for the dress body.
  • Two fabric scraps of dimensions 3.5-inches width and 29-inches length for the lower ruffle in a contrasting color and print.
  • Two fabric scraps of dimensions 2.5-inches width and 9-inches length for the shoulder straps
  • Two pieces of 3/8-inch elastic, 4.5-inches long for the shoulder straps and a piece of elastic, 10.5-inches long for the chest.

Sewing

Take the fabric scraps for the dress body, ruffle and strap.

We start with the casing for the chest elastic.

Take the dress body piece, fold one of its longer edges by 3/8-inch and press. Fold again by ½-inch and press once more.

Sew the casing down along the edge.

Let’s do the ruffles. First join the two strips to get one long piece for the ruffle. Next we hem the ruffle.

Fold one of the longer edges by ½-inch and press. Fold by another ½-inch and press again.

Sew down the hem.

Let’s gather the ruffle. For that we need to turn the upper thread tension of the machine to zero and stitch length to the longest to get a basting stitch.

Sew a basting stitch 3/8-inch away from the raw edge of the ruffle strip.

Pull the thread from the bobbin gently and gather the ruffle. Adjust the gathering to make it uniform and to match it with the lower edge of the dress body.

Place the raw edge of the ruffle along the raw long edge of the dress body, with the right sides together and pin.

Turn the machine settings back to normal

Sew the ruffle onto the dress, removing the pins as you go. Turn over to the right side and topstitch along the seam line of the ruffle and dress to give it a neat finish.

Next, we insert the chest elastic.

Take the chest elastic and insert it through the casing using a safety pin. Secure the two ends of the elastic by sewing back and forth a few times.

Fold the dress over with the right sides together and aligning the edges. Sew it shut along the side seam.

Next we move on to the shoulder straps.

Take one of the pieces for the shoulder strap, fold its two longer edges towards the wrong side by 3/8-inch and press.

Fold it in half lengthwise and press again.

Sew it shut along the edge.

Next we do the casing for the shoulder elastic.

Sew a straight line, ½-inch away from the sewn edge to form the casing.

Take the elastic required for the shoulder strap and insert it through the casing using a safety pin. Sew back and forth at the ends.to secure.

Repeat the steps to get the other strap done.

Let’s attach the strap on to the dress.

Place the strap about one inch away from the side edges and pin.

Secure the two straps on to the bodice by topstitching above and below the chest elastic.

So quick and easy...even more so if you use a gathered trim for the ruffle! I had some eyelet trim and used that for the ruffle on the bottom and added some flat eyelet to the outside edge of the straps which created a ruffle on the shoulders. Finished 2 in a very short time and they are so cute!
