Easy Kid’s Top in Five Steps

Sharing is caring!

easy kids top in five steps

I’ve created a collection of easy-to-make kids’ patterns, all of which can be completed in just five steps! From a simple dress pattern made from a single rectangular piece to versatile unisex overalls, I’ve covered almost everything—except a simple top.

I’m excited to introduce a new kids’ top pattern that can also be completed in just five steps. You’ll only need to cut two pieces for the top body and two for the facing. There’s no need to attach bias binding or sew zippers. This top fastens at the shoulders with snap buttons, making it quick to sew and easy to put on and take off.

This versatile top is perfect for both boys and girls. Pair it with my tie-hem shorts or puffy elasticized pants for a charming outfit.

Once you master this simple top, I’ll be sharing a tutorial to transform it into boutique-style designs with just a few tweaks. Get ready to create a whole new line of unique and stylish tops for your little one, all starting with this easy-to-sew foundation!

Gather the supplies ( here I have used the same fabric for the top and facing).

Step-1: Cutting The Pieces

Cut the front template for the top, at the end of this PDF. Fold the fabric and keep the template on the fold. Mark around it and cut along the marked line to get the front piece.

Repeat with the back template for the back piece of the top.

Your front and back top pieces would look like this.

Next we need to cut the facing for the top. For that we use the same template but we cut the templates shorter along the second glue lines.

Use the template to cut the facing pieces. Your facing pieces would look like this.

Step-2: Sewing The Side Seams

Keep the two pieces of the top layered, with the right sides together and aligning the armholes, side and lower edges. Sew along the two side seams to join.

We move on to the facing pieces.

Fold the lower edge of the facing pieces by 3/8-inch and press. Sew along the edge of the fold to finish.

Layer and sew the side seams of the facing pieces, just as we did with the top pieces.

Step-3: Sewing The Top and Facing Together

Turn the top over to the wrong side and the facing on to its right side. Keep the top facing the lower edge of the facing and slide it over the facing.

Align the neck, shoulders and the armholes of the two pieces together and pin all around.

Sew around the pinned edges, removing the pins as you go. Now the top and facing pieces are sewn together.

Clip the corners and the edges to reduce the bulk in the seam.

Flip the facing over to its right side and push it into the wrong side of the top. Poke out the edges using a mildly sharp object like the tip of a wooden dowel.

Press and topstitch around the neck, shoulders and armholes to make it neat and crisp.

Step-4: Finishing The Lower Hem

Fold the lower edge of the top by 3/8-inch towards the wrong side and press. Fold by 3/4-inch and press again.

Sew the hem down along the edge of the fold.

Step-5: Attaching The Buttons

Attach a pair of KAM snaps on the wrong side of the back shoulders and the complimentary pair on the right side of the front shoulders.

Our Top is done!
